If textures are not existing/not found for maya first fix the path. This means select the textures find the right path on your drive and set a path. When all textures are found select all textures, then move to your desired new path. After that, you have to use "set path", to use the new path. I guess your error comes from… -

mirror weights is dead simple to use! turn on mirror mode, select a bunch of either blue or green verts, then tell it to mirror blue or green verts, depending on your selection... I wouldn't bother using Paint Weights for low-poly things anyway, anything under 3000 polys i'd just hand-weight the verts using the Abs. Effect… -

Would it be easily scriptable to recalculate the edges based on the last method, say on a selection or only on polys with more then 2 tris? hmmm could be that you are baking a shadows map. I take it you are trying to make an AO map. Instead of selecting a shadows map (element) select a lighting map instead. That should fix things since you are actually baking the lighting from the high to the low much like you would with a normal map. Shadow maps are different… -
