Basically start with freelance, get an AMAZING portfolio and start applying when you feel like ur GOOD! Nowadays is a bit hard to get someone to sponsor you for an H1b visa.
I know Silo is pretty much dead and hasn't had an update in years, but for £15 I might pick it up. If I ever return to freelancing it's a bargain to have in my arsenal.
I'm not looking for a job. Already a freelance modeler. I want to become an artist for myself. Naturally, i'd use the skill to help make more money, but I wouldn't be seeking employment.
Probably not related to what you're asking for but I've used Freelancer, managed to bid for a couple of previs jobs outside of the entertainment industry and as a worldwide platform therein it's network covers most regions.
I'm not doing furniture for freelance now but I'm getting ready for this. The problem is that I'm already doing basic blockout and still results are subpar for my taste. I think it will come with practice.
All I know is, as a freelancer doing both 2D and 3D gigs, more skills you have to offer the better the chances of staying busy. (But getting overlapping assignments is a pain in the keister!)
when freelancing I have had work where I was only hired to sculpt, but thats usually just a couple of months, at a studio I would think that position is very rare.
@Paul, and don't forget, freelance work isn't a very stable job, contracts end all the time and you might be out of work for a while trying to find your next job.
