Unreal's mesh decals can be used to break up tiling and add detail. They aren't just for blood splatters and puddles...… -

I think studios discriminate because they want as few variables in their workflow as possible. You're right though, if you can reliably export art from your package to theirs with minimal effort, it shouldn't matter. That's why formats like .fbx (ironically owned by Autodesk) exist. Barrel discoloration is the most probable result of excessive heat - this shows a barrel brought to about 500 degrees F: If a barrel actually begins to glow, then the entire barrel will glow a dull orange or red. This sight has the best images I've found so far… -
