Sure, it all comes down to preference and work flow. I generally use it when I want to select something behind a polygon that's in the way or something like that.

Hayden ... yeah, isolate works at the mesh item level. If you select polygons you can then use the hide/hide unselected/unhide functionality to isolate them.
Try Surfaces>Reverse Direction. Its the last options in the menu. The reason reserve normal doesn't work is because that only works with polygon shapes, not surfaces/NURBS.
It's stylized for tf2, where sometimes proportions are exaggerated. The polygon reduction and the ambient occlusion really pull out how big they are though. In game, it looks pretty good.
