I just got my daughter the bamboo for xmas, and it comes with a tutorial video. The lady in the tutorial kept referring to it as way-com. She had a British accent, so maybe it's a cultural thing, but I would think the company would have her stating their name correctly in the video included with their product :/

get the 3ds max bible from kelly L. Murdock (if you find the 3ds max built in tutorial too slow and unorganized). It's both a tutorial and reference book. Has small examples for everything it covers, and it covers a lot. I used this to learn max in college. good luck and welcome to polycount!
lots of traditional and digital painting tutorials on youtube. Lots. I like the tutorials from Aaron Blaise a lot. He was an illustrator/animator for many of the classic disney films. Even though I am not doing stylized textures I watch his content a lot just to soak in the art fundamentals.
