WHOA! For some reference, the largest lightmap we used for our Unearthly challenge was a 128. Most were 32x32's. And as you can see in our final shots, shadows are nice, soft and detailed. Once Lightmass finishes the actual lighting part, its taking all those lightmaps, re-mapping them for better shadow contrast resolution… -

Baking down the textures to something ps2-friendly ie not simply scaling them down but also using a lot of UV sharing, stretchy UVs aso. 256*256 is enormous. You'll be severely limiting what you can have in your environment and elsewhere if you go using textures that large. 128*128 is generally workable for characters and vehicles and so-forth, though you're better to opt for lower than that if you can get away with it. Be as efficient as you possibly can… -
NORMAL MAP HELP
whenever i try and bake a normal map it all comes out just as a flat piece of 128 128 255 colour at whatever size ive set it at. im definately projecting from my cage around my low polygon tank onto the high poly tank and the cage is fairly tight i just cant figure out what is wrong. when i used to bake out normal maps… -

It's a 128*128 texture, and its design doesn't seem to correspond to anything related to the mapping of the body. Past such a low resolution threshold, masking would be better off done per-polygon rather than per-pixel.
