My vote goes for Keyboard Shortcut Override being turned on, its the devils button... It forces the shortcuts for sub menus to override the 3dsmax main shortcuts. So when you're working on vert mode in edit poly with KSO on, Ctrl-S will toggle soft select on and not save. It's a little button in the top menu that looks… -

Many thanks Specter. I agree it would be a better idea to do a stylized 3D, the only reason I'm trying to go for a more realistic look is simply because I'm yet to attempt a realistic character. I've only done one other character but I went stylized with that and wanted to try realism. I may redo it, or do another version… -

If just the shape, you could literally start with a sphere, squash and stretch it till you block out the main shape, delete 3/4th of it and you now have a workable mass you could push and pull verts as needed.
