Yeah, Skin Wrap is definitely what you want for this. The description of what you're trying to do is pretty much the definition of what Skin Wrap is good at :P
ppoznysz: one crit, paint out the highlight in the dark edges of the wrappings, right now the solid highlight makes it look like the wrappings are just a flat sticker
I think this just might be a "waist sash", it's just a piece of cloth that has been wrapped around a couple times and the dagger is stuck in-between a couple of the wrapped layers.

This should work just fine. The skin wrap doesn't care if you used Envelopes, Paint Weights, or manual assignments. As long as there's a Skin modifer, you can Skin Wrap it.
do you use projection master to get the wraps lined up around the clubs, without doing that i find it hard to make the wraps run together around a cylinder shape

Not a fan of the leather wrap on the handle as is. I'd find a different reference-even if it is accurate. The pattern is odd. As far as the texture of the wrap, it's too clean compared to the beat up sword. Other than that this is looking quite nice.
Tweaked some of the forms in the face, and then took a pass at that head-wrap. The top of the wrap is still very muddy in particular. On the next subdiv I'll take a hack at making more sense out of it. :\ p.s. Those are not french fries.
