UDIM is simply a standard for organising materials so in a functional sense yes, they're the same. The benefit of UDIM is that somebody else has done the work of organising things for you.
I agree with the spikes. Very staby. But so darn cool. Sometimes I think functionality over design is a hard thing to balance. I wanna see the update!!

Ah, yes yes. This certainly should be a screenshot of your active viewport and not a render. Essentially doing what alt-prnt-scrn does with the additional functionality already in the script.
Maybe hit up some of the free tutorials on digitaltutors.com. The DVD's they sell are pretty good, less of a deep coverage of everything and more of a fast functional overview. Good luck!
