I vouch personally for Mudbox and Blender in this regard. Photoshop is a nightmare. ZBrush is based upon Vertex painting. 3DC has some amazing ideas and killer tech behind it which isn't polished. Isn't XNormal free? That's what most people use with Blender, which is also free. In fact, I think Blender+XNormal+Gimp is the de facto pipeline for hobbyists. There are people who actually use ZBrush to unwrap shit? I still do most of my retopo in other apps too, I mostly use zremesher to get sculptable topology on dynameshed clothing pieces. If you want to go to college maybe consider studying fine arts, such as painting, illustration, sculpture, or even photography. 'Environment Artist' for Castaway. Everytime I show someone my business card I get the impression they think I make sculptures out of tree bark while decked out in tye-dye clothes. I also make muffins once a week. They're tasty.
