do we know of any blender functionality to scatter/paint (instances of) objects onto a surface, aligned to face normals and orientated in the direction of brushstrokes? 3ds max advanced painter script or the builtin object painter come to mind. i know about the hairsystem/particle method to populate a surface but would…
anybody have any luck with the curve draw functionality in blender - the one pimped in videos about a year ago as an addon for 2.78? in 2.79 where it's now built-in, trying to draw on top of poly surfaces sometimes works, sometimes the stroke lifts off the surface in places and goes haywire, making the whole exercise…
Also don't forget about the button for face snapping on the bottom bar that lets you snap more than one point at once to the surface. It's really handy with extrusions of multiple points, but you do have to make sure you only are extruding on the front side of the surface otherwise you'll get funky faces that go from one…

Unfortunately, the boolean mods create ngons that don't work well for edge flow in the subdiv mod, and applying the booleans after the subdiv creates a lot of smoothing artifacts.…
The guide mesh is to avoid pinching/rippling issues when adding details to curved surfaces. This video explains it pretty well: https://youtu.be/3rlMzsBWtPY
Spiffy, Myclay, Xrg - those are brilliant. Sequences like this are invaluable. Someone needs to create a definitive library of how-to's for hard-surface stuff in Blender.
