Windows 8.1 64 here, running fine. Does it make a difference if you right-click the shortcut, go to Properties and then set some options in the Compatibility tab (like Compatibility Mode for example)?

DX12 is Microsoft's response to AMD's Mantle, it's meant to hook up better with hardware and give more performance, but honestly if they make DX12 an exclusive to Windows 8.1, they can go walk themselves out, but I'm sure they will do it.

My cage script has been updated and included into the Vertex Normal Toolkit. It can't do a per-vertex distance, only direction. But we're hoping that next major version (801) has proper cage baking and such.
I have the 4GB Gtx 770 and haven't experienced anything out of the ordinary. I'm using Maya 2014 though and I'm also on windows 8.1. It seems like you might have to upgrade to a new version.
