Ive always gone with an unrealistically smooth edge style before to help baking, but this time i decided to go for a more realistic approach and keep the edge smoothness to what it is on the real thing.. i might go ahead and adjust the edges once i get the results of the first bake but for now ill keep it as it is.… -

The above posters have good info on getting the wood grain. I just wanted to comment on the normal map you are showing in your OP. Your original normal map bake looks like you baked it with your low poly edges set to 'Hard.' Make sure when you bake you bake with smoothing group 1 (all edges smooth) which will give you a… -

It would be best if your posted your normal map. My guess off had would be your smoothing groups. Have that front wall on its own smoothing group or none at all then it should make a flat normal that you can tile as you are trying to do now. Of course the down side is you will have a minor break in the map along the wall… -

Thanks danpaz, the smoothing groups are there, but not sure why it's so blocky. That's something else I need to look at. The geometry may have gotten corrupted and I simply need to clone, delete, and re-assign smoothing groups. As for the bow string, it didn't show up when I imported. Looks like you might have hard smoothing splits on the inside of your UV islands, or you have UVs split but no separation in UV space. If your smoothing groups/normals aren't showing up when you import your mesh in UDK have a look at the maya FBX export settings.
