I've not sen the film yet, but if it was like Forrest Gump then I'd suggest that Forrest Gump did the borrowing - it being written in the mid 80's and CCBB being writen back in the 1920s by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
(Max user). F for cutting, G for connect, and B for target weld. When I upgraded to Max 7 I lost my macro's and felt lost - until I remapped the keys and was happy again.

what kio said you don't necessary see the triangles, but everything that gets rendered is still triangulated and the algorythm behind the software determines how, which is going to F up your textures (as you have demonstrated)
Glad you figured it out. Although there are better ways to handle this, with more flexibility for editing. Usually questions like these are posted in the Sticky thread How The F*#% Do I Model This? - Reply for help with specific shapes
I have this issue too. The way I make it work 100% of the time is: Draw out your Subtool. Edit mode on. (T) THEN TURN ON Polyframes (Shift+F) THEN press the Groups Split button. Boom
I've been getting used to mechanical, but if I can I use regular pencils, mainly the F and HB and occasionally the 2H. I sharpen with an exacto knife and smooth out the edges with sandpaper.. old school!
