This is the first time it's ever done this, I've always maintained the same output settings... It is odd. Im re-texturing an old model for my portfolio ( https://www.artstation.com/artwork/gameboy-pocket ) Maybe, just maybe it's something to do with the Obj files. Just started messing with Modo this week. I really like the design of it better than Max or Maya. It feels a lot cleaner for modeling. Anyone interested should spend some time in there. You can export all the same files (FBX, OBJ). You can even 3d paint in it. Seems to be a great alternative.
I'm not sure how to upload this with mats yet, I tried zipping up the .mat file i got from DDO up with the OBJ, but It didn't work. I'll try it more tomorrow. broken vertex shading array or so, had the same recently. I solved it by exporting to FBX and importing it back (OBJ apparently preserved that error). Made me once already to write a script that rebuilds a mesh and creates clean arrays under the hood, because the same shit happens sometimes with UV verts as well.
max pelt is some good, but the seam system is very ugly.. i always use the split function in edit poly, its way faster and relax dialog is very importand, because the peltmap alone sucks hard^^ another tool to automate uvmapping were exporting it to obj (with seams) and put it throu unvold3d or something..^^
