I am exporting from Maya 2013 using the existing FBX plugin forcing it to export as ASCII FB 2012. Any idea on the smoothing issues here? Exporting for UDK ;)

Looks like you are exporting to FBX 2014 format. Only 2013 is supported. There should be a warning about it in the error log when you import as well.

If you use max 2013, is not going to work well, use max 2012 or a little preview with marmoset should work, if not, maybe is your gamma setup.
