This is just a case of needing more geometry. If you start by using a cylinder with enough sides, you won't have to add in vertical support loops to retain the shape. As for the amount of sides/1000 poly limit: then sacrifice some polies from the stick part. Currently the explosive half is just too angular, as it's twice the diameter of the stick but using the same amount of sides. If you really don't want to use more polies, you could make the small part 16 sided and the big part 24…
Right now your gold is reading very greenish. The concept is a lot warmer, more orange in other terms. You can make a quick fix by using a hue adjustment through Photoshop's Adjustment tools and slide it towards a more orange tone. And bigger strokes, block everything in. I still see henpecking.
I think the Wii text needs to slide in faster and have more of a wobble as it stops. If you havnt already you should check out videocopilot.net for After Effects tutorials, The guy there has tons of really great ones to follow (and its free), helped me tons when i was first learning AE
One other thing that movies tend to have that games haven't adopted yet (maybe soon) are muscle systems and sliding skin. There are few muscle systems available out there, 3dsmax has one that was part of CAT but works on any object. Maya has the Maya Muscle system, I think its included if not it should be.
In the Keyframing Tools rollout there is a group called Separate FK Tracks. You can separate them from there. At a glance it doesn't look like it does anything because it duplicates the current keys to all the tracks. But if you start moving them around you'll see they are separated.
