A 3d artist can be employed and suck at 2d (you are looking at one). However, I do wish I could draw better so I could more quickly communicate ideas and test out personal projects, etc. If you want to do characters, doing some figure drawing classes will improve your 2d art and improve your character modeling skill… -

Maybe you wuld benefit from using some 3d as a base and design on top of it, while you improve your raw drawing skills, also dont know what deviced you used but some people also benefit from working on pecil first and scan after that.
