Wrapped up Inktober 2017 with a plague doctor's mask, based on the "mask" prompt. Probably could've gotten more detail into the mask itself, particularly leather stitching, but I gave myself a strict hour limit today.

You don't need any of this - you can just use the hypershade command. https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2017/ENU/Maya-Tech-Docs/Commands/hyperShade.html for example this: hyperShade -objects $myMaterial; returns a string with everything that has $myMaterial applied to it.
I'm having same problem in both maya 2016 and 2017. If you've found a solution, I would love to know it. I've tried a few things, but i'm not experienced enough with Maya to know exactly what settings i'm changing. Thanks
