Ya its possible but you will have to select the geometry in the outliner and make it selectable again. This works best if you delete history first so the Geo you are editing it no longer influenced by the curve. I am using a cage and the problem exists with or without the cage. Max 2017 got selection bug that I noticed as well, sometimes unable to select certain verts/ edges/ faces. You can try to convert to editable mesh then back to editable poly, it'll fix sometimes, but some other time it just simply wont. Rotate viewport from another angle to view your mesh also might help with the selection…
