I use CGTextures all the time. I also take my own photos too. Sometimes CGTextures just doesn't have exactly what I'm looking for. I never usually need to use more than 15mb per day, but I may invest in a pay account soon. I've been using it more and more lately.

Mental Ray may not work correctly when rendering to texture in Max. I usually add a global Illumination skylight (using light tracer set to defaults), and bake out the "lighting" checkbox in render to texture.

which renderer in Maya? Mental Ray has a Sun & Sky option in the Indirect Lighting tab in the render settings there's also the Final Gather option I'm not a Max user but these two option *may* be what you're after
