So I started unwrapping in Headus UV layout and now when I export mesh into 3dsmax back as an obj I get this weird shading issue. I don't know what it is.
Try resetting the xform, or if that doesn't work export as an obj and re-import. As for what caused the issue, hard to say without looking at the actual file.

could try saving out the uv's then reloading them on to an obj of the model. ie export then import. Try attaching the model to a box then deleting the box.
