SSD+Win7 will add a nice noticeable difference to the overall "snappiness" of your system, I did that with my Intel Q6600/8gb system(was using xp 64 previously) Upgrading to 8GB is a good idea too, esp if you're going to win7 64 bit. Right, i built a system with a q6600 quad core, 8 gigs of dd2, and a pretty standard($120) 8800. This is a mad fast system, and it can easily handle 32 million polys in mudbox2. Total cost of the system was around $1100. 2 280's is just..... crazy overkill, a decent 8800/9800 will give you all the performance you actually… -

Yes it is always better to split off your alpha stuff if it is only a small % of the asset that needs alpha, the reason is simple, a 1024x1024 texture with 24 bit(standard) is 1/4 the size of the original texture, and a 1024x1024 32 bit(with alpha) is only 1/2 the size when compressed.
