I don't think that 3d coat can actually be a substitute to substance. Yet idk, never really used it. Most of the time I see people using 3d coat for stylized assets like hand painted stuff.
Maybe you can start by spell checking your 'about me' page? And not using frames on your site? And providing a pdf and doc version of your resume? All things that should be standard for anyone looking for a job, games or not.
Hey Vig I look forward to seeing how you write it. I wrote a similar tutorial a while back: http://www.icantbelieveitsnothighpoly.com/UVW%20Texture%20Transfer%20Tutorial%20with%203ds%20Max09.pdf mainly driven at begininers.

Lookin' good! Idk how I feel about that new piece though, the one that wraps around that drum and over the barrel. It feels a bit out of place, I can see what you're trying to do with it though. Keep it up! :)
Generally speaking, no. Especially since the normal map will be compressed so your scratches would become just a bunch of sploshy pixels in a sequence. Keep them in your dif and spec, unless we're talking about a pretty big indentation here.
