Hey there, So I have fair amount of time free at the moment so I'm taking the opportunity to boost my portfolio and improve my 3d skills. I'm going to create Tye n' Rex aiming for 10, 000 tris and 2x1024 textures. Since I'm making this for my folio any crits would be great. No part of the design is final...

It happens to me ocationally whenever I switch back and forth between Maya 2009 and 2011 (its a workflow thing ^_^) What I usually do is I export the two problem geometry to OBJ with the Normals and Smoothing turned on in the options the import it the Maya version I'm going to work on.
sometimes I stress out but my girlfriend reminds me I make art all day at work :P If I'm out of work chances are I'll have enough stuff to make a new portfolio, if not, I'm still able to find work based on my 2009 portfolio.
Max2008 or lower? I remember that being an issue with the Global Super Sampling setting, I think it would disapear if you set it to something like Hamersley. I'm pretty sure it was fixed in 2009 or 2010. Ben brings up a good idea too. If all else fails... xNormal!
Pretty damn cool, have you seen this? http://cow.mooh.org/2009/07/plungercam-2-cheaper-and-more.html I'll admit i have't tried it (no slr yet). but its cheap and cool. If you don't wanna click the linky it's a homemade Tilt/Shift lens, pretty neato.
-read this about lips: http://www.stanprokopenko.com/blog/2009/07/draw-lips/ -the area between elbow and hand looks quite alienic, at least without clothes -legs seem too thin below knees. they may be thin on some of ref pics but notice shapes that muscles make:
If you have Substance Designer, you can use this node : http://www.manufato.com/?page_id=1009 It will allow you to create a tangent space normal map that simulates chamfered edges on a low poly mesh. You'll get much better curvature bakes using the resulting normal map.
11 months, back in 2009. Absolutely horrible. I couldn't find a job for shit. Second longest unemployment stint was 6 months in 2011, right before I got picked up by Timegate. Now, I'm two weeks into my third time unemployed. Fun shit. :|
If you woke up on Jan 11th 2009 and believe the tar and feather revisionist history Fox news has been slinging for the past 2 years. You're totally right its all Obama's fault... You guys are blind and crazy... I'm going to go make art.
