If your model includes a lot of 90 degree angles, use smoothing groups. If it's organic, 1 smoothing group would do fine. In the belt example, I would embrace the thought of extra meshes for parts that aren't seamlessly connected in life. You've modeled the head too low an angle, the one in the photo looks to be closer to a natural resting angle. Everything else got skewed from that. I very much remember this :) I thought it was really impressive given that it had a full-on animated character, a smooth 3D engine, and your instantly recognizable texturing style of course.
