For me, Steam isn't the place to buy new AAA games or ones that are about 1 year old, it's a place to buy awesome indie/smaller games :p Ones like Bastion, Magicka, Super Meat Boy, Limbo and Orcs Must Die :) And the prices for these kind of games are always very fair.
Well, last time I checked most of Japanese AAA titles were looking pretty sharp both technically and art-direction wise. Asian MMORPG market seems to be doing great as well. It's true that many games never actually go worldwide, but they seem to be quite culture-specific anyways.
Thinking about picking up it. How fun is the single player campaign? Right now I'm busy going through Escape Goat. Steam once again is making me stay away from boring AAA console games. All the interesting games are coming out by tiny indie devs.
I think Sony has the hardware lovers sold on this, they need to heavily concentrate on the gamer crowd. A few original AAA titles will be the selling point on this one. Call Of Duty, Uncharted, Killzone and Resistance might sell this, but if they release an Original title that ranks up to those guys, it's an instant sell…
Well I learned something new today. I thought high poly models took preference over the use of procedural generated ones in AAA production. I had been developing an environment that was 95% hand sculpted, and the other 5% were procedurally driven. I'll look into changing this in the future.
For context, I graduated in 2017 with a game design degree that didn't teach me how to do anything past basic Maya modeling. I built characters out of an interest and applied to so many places with the only common theme being rejection. I moved to LA and underwent a mentorship and scrubbed my portfolio and made 3 pieces…
here is a thread where people who just got their first job post their portfolio, if you look through a lot of their artstations you can quickly get an idea of the quality bar a lot of them are hitting. https://polycount.com/discussion/187512/recently-hired-in-aaa-show-us-your-portfolio/p1
The character isn't strong enough to stand on its own (for high end AAA anyway), however that doesn't mean its wasted effort. Knowledge of marvelous designer and your basics of human proportion and anatomy can help you make statues or similar props for your environments. Just adding this to rest of the advices.
heh cghub gold awards and top row is seriously overrated and usually biased quite a bit. some mediocre work from some AAA game will get spotlight just because of the brand, while someone's personal work however awesome it may be will be overlooked. dont waste your energy over such things.
The opportunities for artists, especially game artists, have never been better. There are fewer AAA game jobs available than ten years ago, but that loss is far outweighed by the gains in mobile, indies and self-employment. The free or inexpensive tools we have available are powerful and liberating. This is the start of a…
