I believe Maya now defaults to Python3 while Zen Tools use Python2, so you may be able to get the script to work by simply changing the Python version in Mayas preferences.
Not a direct answer, but in Python you just use the OS module. To be upfront though, if you are building a pipeline tools, you'd be better of using python.

I installed the colors python script into Maya 2017. I received this error. # Error: line 1: ImportError: file C:\Program Files\Quixel SUITE 2.0\colors\main.py line 1: No module named PySide # I don't have a lot of Python experience and I'm not sure how to remedy this. Maya is 2.4, 2.5, etc. (depends on what version of Maya you're using) Blender is Python 3, There are some "breaking" differences between Pything 2.x and Python 3, so be sure just to learn the one your apps require, though you'll eventually be using Python 3 in the future. :)
Tidal Blast all the softwares you listed support Python,except Unity/UE4. I would definitely recommand you to learn Python and Substance Designer to start.Just create some nice graphs in Designer and optimize your workflow by making a few Python scripts for your modeling/texturing application.
