One way is to get a bitmap or a vector of the layout you need, then uv to that. The resolution is up to you, just render at that size. I.e. 10 inches at 300 dpi is 3000 pixels across.
I have SP and still use xNormal. Looking forward to 3.20... But yeah, getting through those earlier years without it would have been trying to say the very least.

It shouldn't be too hard to get a new card. I'm running maya, max, mudbox, and zbrush perfectly fine on a Radeon 5770, which goes for between $120 and $140 now days.
If you think 500$ for a good that usually costs 200-300$ is fine feel free to buy it. I certainly won't. It doesn't look like it'll be three times as fun as a Gamecube.
