Things have change a lot in the last 6 years you can now use the same amount for a character as a whole scene/level. Some of the characters in tf2 push 25,000 Tris. But a lot of these tris are used in the face to get smooth and nice facial animations.

i believe it's all about the balance - indoor/outdoor things and stuff. plus posture, frequent blinking/eye-training, proper drinking and suitable setup of the work-area - lighting, TFTs instead of the old CRT ray-guns and may i suggest trying a dark desktop color scheme?
i still think some of the best cinematics are the ones they did for warcraft3/tft, especially when arthas comes back to take the throne and murder his father the dialogue/story in this one was kinda... meh :F superb visuals though, especially the waves
