If she's gutting people all day long maybe she ought to have some blood splatter to go with what's on her axe, kind of like the olden day butcher or the dude from chainsaw massacre. That, some dirt, and the normal map and she'll look like a really mean, bitchy, father fucker.
Do you have Maya? It has a display method that shows the tangent axes in the viewport, actually on your mesh. UDK also has this, though it seemed a bit strange to me last I looked at it, because the arms of each axis tripod weren't at right angles to each other. So does Xnormal...
my first attempt at putting hi poly detail onto a low poly model. plus i'm learning zbrush in the process. An axe blade will be coming out of the mouth of the fish/dragon mouth. texture is on the first pass - going for a brass metal feel but i think the head is a bit like wood. enjoy!

When stacking uvs you shift the overlapping ones to outside the main uv space (0 to 1 space on both axes) but make sure you move it by a whole 1 unit so that it retains the same position on the texture. Also, make sure you optimize that low poly a bit before the uv mapping. Idk if maya can retain uvs properly after…
