That much of a difference might be just Substance Designer saving in 32 bit tiff or exr with extra gamma applied . Set it to linear or export into regular 8 or 16 bit
How are your experiences working with the 980? I'm considering buying a new machine in the new year, maybe 16 gig ram. Was considering 32 gig but might be overkill...

To increase the size of the default checker pattern, go to the connected place2dTexture node and adjust the Repeat UV values from 4 (default) to something bigger like 8 or 16.
@Klaudio2U Yeah I already tried that, with no success. Imho that only works for older cc version (so photoshop Version14 - 15), whereas cc 2015 is version 16.
Acutally, I don't have that either. I can add mups using the drop down, but there's no x to remove maps. And no button beside the '16 bits per channel'
