I'd use shift double click on the next edge to select the edge ring instead of going around the object and selecting each one individually.... But in Maya, it's all called the same as it is in max. It depends what you want. If I wanted the studs to look welded/molded to the surface of that bottom ring and what you are making is a sub D high poly. I would make them floaters. It's not a hassle to cut them in as you have done either but I would have probably used less poly in doing so, making the cylinders just 8… -

More progress shots, the arms and legs. I changed the arm somewhat compare to the original concept, turning the side wings into an actual sword, gundam style. Add details like floaters and panels to the arms as well as making the hand with proper articulations. This part was the most difficult to get the proportions right.… -
