I think a general rule of thumb for this sort of thing is so try and model in a post that is near halfway between the minimum and maximum angles for rotation, not only is this good for deformation, but also UVs. I think Story is far too overrated in games. I personally prefer an experience like Half Life 2, Call of Duty 4, FEAR or Portal. Yep, I think there are still way too many professional game artists who fall foul of this - they spend 10% (or more) extra time on something that only looks 1% (or less) better, which hurts the project as a whole. Spend ages perfecting stuff for your personal work, and just make stuff which fits the game when working… -

Great job for your first character! You've even taken on hair which is not any easy part of characters. You're perceptions of this character correct. So I expect your next one will be much improved.
