I don't work in AAA - I'm learning how to sculpt because the Blizzard/Riot method seems to be gaining traction in traditionally hand painted only studios. PBR/layered, crazyness, I don't really expect to worry about that for another 5-10 years. -

I'm curious to how larger studios like Blizzard handle this. Do they allow multiple 3d softwares for modelling etc? I guess the final version of said model should be exported through one program since they probably have in-house software doing that. Anyone? -

I'd say you would have to move out of the US only of you want to. Moving between states isn't that hard, most studios will cover relo for full time positions, especially large ones. I believe Blizzard covers relo and temporary housing. -

that's so funny, I saw this today too! I saw the article at gamasutra about how blizzard is cracking down and there was a link to this article. Crazy man. But dont feel too bad for thos mexicans that got laid off at blacksnow, they all work at mythic now.;) -

I sort of agree with the reasons for not extending the deadline, even if that doesn't benefit me, yet, even in the "real" world, deadlines get extended all the time. Blizzard is a good example of this. They'd rather get it right than deliver on schedule. But I understand those who don't want to extend it. That's fair. -

It's too bad that it's all grey, the papercraft ref you posted looked so nice, with some blue/green gradient and yellow and red spots. Well I don't relly know Starcraft 2, but generally Blizzard stuff is colored, not grey. The mesh looks good anyway, but the texture is a bit boring ^^. -

See what Blizzard did in Warcraft 3: they painted everything onto a set of tiling textures. The terrain looks like different textures layering on top of each other, but they actually are not: everything is painted. It doesn't need any complex shader (or even a programmable shader) to look good. -
Re: Should companies figure out a different approach to the MMO?
The rumor is that Blizzard's next mmo, codename Titan, is a "next gen" (normal maps, fancy shaders, etc) sci-fi, MMOFPS. Which is a good idea because they don't want to cannibalize their WoW playerbase - with the current subscriber numbers, WoW is going to be around for a really long time.
