The edges of the objects probably need to be reinforced with extra edge loops on either side. I think the first time you sub-divide the mesh its going to round everything out too much. It kind of depends on how dense and what variety. Spaced out and sparse like a blue spruce, or short and bushy like a dwarf spruce? Do enough of these and you start to become a plant nerd... wee.
