Re: re thin edges cloth - yay or nay ?
In 3ds Max the Shell modifier has four uv options for the new edge, basically: none, smear the edge uv, extend and stitch to main uv, or make a separate uv strip. It's pretty nice, just used this. -
Re: Short games
I think this is a negative trend in the game consumer mindset. Instead of judging quality, they just judge length... I would rather play a good short game than a needlessly extended and filler packed long game. -

The ending to return of the Jedi was ruined in the extended edition, in 96 or 97. I was like wtf, where is the music!!!! you bastards!!!!! I have never seen that bitchy Vader version and I hope i never do. -

the same is true in every industry - and I would stretch to say it's not local to the US. The corporate model is really good at making the top brass wealthy off the backs of the workers without extending to them the same financial security. -

The "extended" versions of Photoshop has 3D painting functionality. But compared to other software, Photoshop is really lacking when it comes to anything but lowpoly graphics (mobile games, browser games, etc) due to lag at higher polycounts. -

that would work but lights cant be spawned. you'd need to extend the apropriate light class (ie. spotlight, or whatever light type you want) and set bStatic=false and bNoDelete=false on its defaultproperties, and that will allow it to be spawned -

Re: School Success Rate
Are schools even offering courses in programs like Zbrush or Mudbox? Do they train you in creating a normal map using RTT or alternatives like xNormal or Crazybump? Are methods like modular construction or extending the assets covered? -
Re: Non Competes and Game Artists.
If the non-compete is basically an extended employment during which you don't work and receive a reduced salary it's valid but if they just tell you that you can't do that while they don't pay you anything as compensation it's not AFAIK.
