401 is rather unstable yes. I´ve gone back to using 302 for modelling and UVmapping. I only use 401 for rendering atm. -

you could try to normal map the "ribs" around the base, of course they couldn't be as pronounced, but it'd cut out like 300-500 tris. -
Re: 3dsmax 2018, I am afraid Max demise will accelerate.
So.. I tried. I exported as obj and imported into Blender. Blender maxed out my 32G ram. FYI, 3dsMax needed 10G for this.
