As explainaed in the tutorial, it won't work without all the extra sockets. On Magdalena/Effigy I had a static root bone which I used as Bip01 (and worked perfecty) but I think the rule is that the "Bip01" socket HAS to be the bone highest up in the hierarchy. Those can all use the default PBR metal/roughness shader. Unless you are doing something stylized, most materials can use the default shader.
