You need to make sure that your polys are selected, though. Before assigning a UVUnwrap, select all polys, then apply the unwrap. Then in the UVwindow, click the face selection tool and select/scale the center face. If I just straight up apply an Unwrap WITHOUT first selecting the mesh faces, it works fine.
in maya : create > set > quick select set, then right click in the outliner and hit 'select set members' to fetch back that saved selection. In max you just select stuff, type the desired name in the empty filed in the main toolbar, and it then fills up and becomes a selection dropdpwn. Dunno if it works on components tho.
Selecting the faces you want to apply the material to, and dragging the material over to the selected faces/assigning the material to the selection would also do the same thing. It automatically groups those selected faces under the same material ID :)
last time i checked, there was still a bug that would select hidden objects if i did a select all. ideally, select all should only select objects that are not hidden. SP1 does not list any fix to this issue.
