Selection types are the number keys. For example, in editable poly, 1 is vertex, 2 is edge, 3 is border, 4 is polygon, 5 is element, and 6 exits sub-selection and returns you to the whole object.
i'm back, edit: i'm feeling motivated and will continue working on this. edit2: I'm teaching 3d animation in a local center and barely have time to continue this art, so it is going to take some time.

Hi Artist_in_a_box, It seems like the normal is still in "sculpt mode" -- this is a simplified preview of the normal for quick editing. Simply exit sculpt mode before saving out your normal and you should be fine! - Teddy
