having problems downloading the file; the download keeps randomly completing before it's REALLY done (first attempt was 780mb, this last one was 386mb...trying again, hopefully it works this time
Quite so. I can't play games on a GeForce 7800 alone. And the XBox360 came out at approximately $500 over here, so that price tag sounds perfectly appropriate. It's not the "casual gamers" who buy the thing when it's first released anyway - it's the hardcore gamers, and the rich parents with 10- to 15-year-old kids. The…
If I export the mesh and then reimport it in Maya in an empty scene, it still has the correct normals, so it's probably unlikely. Oh, and as I mentioned in the original post, I've also tried to bake using Maya's Transfer Maps with the same result - and of course then there's no exporting/importing involved at all. Here's…

Look into the wire deformer. Its pretty handy when you get into it. There's a few tutorials around: http://vimeo.com/7805975 If its going to end up as normal mapped geometry for a game asset though, you might be able to get away with extruding along a curve and mapping a tiling rope material onto it.
that is wired i only have a 7800 and i have no problem loading it i mean all around memory efficiency was one of my big goals that is also why i cut up my geometry in specific ways to FAKE ligthmap shadows without actually having any hence the 1 uv set

I'm curious what kind of framerate/interactivity you guys are getting with 1million+ poly meshes. On a 1mill mesh, I'm getting around 10FPS, strokes are lumpy and its just generally hard to work. It's a real pain in the arse, especially as Skymatter have a video on their site of a 14million poly mesh with a framerate…
