I just tried changing the byte notation to 0x003 and the shader seems to mess up. I disagree with it being "necessary" to learn 3dsMax. Few companies will require you to know max before they hire you. Some will allow you to use whatever program you want, some will give you time to learn whatever program they use, some do not even use max.
