Ah I dont think subdividing the mesh affects the uvs. Your first post gives the clue. Are you automatically unwrapping? You should be using the unwrap modifier. Place your seams on the lowest sub D, apply the seams, unwrap, open the uv editor. Select an island, dunno what its called as these days Im on Blender, find relax… -

If you could post a picture that would be very helpful Don't forget to use mirroring where possible, that will save you a lot of space and time. I never had any problems just using the default unwrapping in max. If your hair strips aren't attached, just grab em all and hit Relax then lay them out in a sensible way usually… -
