animation in matinee is what I would reccomend over using maya to animate unless it's a complex animation. This is because usually doing this kind of animation in maya requires a new unique mesh which is difficult to set to interact with the player. and it's quite easy to do. It's fairly similar to using maya or something.
I would duplicate the handle and use the Interactive Cut Faces Tool (Edit Mesh > Cut Faces) to slice some edge loops that follow the tape. From there I can extrude strips outward, delete any unwanted polygons, and clean up the edge flow of what's left behind.

Small change added. Popup messages are now orange and bold and span the width. This is to combat duplicate-posts-syndrome. Hopefully it gets a bit more up in the noob's grill. However it might interfere with other things, like mail notification popups, or Draft Saved messages. Just let one of us know if it's irksome.
