I generally don't worry too much about smoothing groups, I just split where it's logical and use TexTools UV islands to smoothing groups script. As long as you split your islands logical then it works. Occasionally I combine smoothing groups where there was a split though.
The wood and telescopes materials are synergizing wonderfully to me :). also going to be trying the pomodoro voodoo with a simple program someone posted on PC called "Tomighty". That and don't overthink stuff / use scripts is something I think I'll keep around the ol' noggin as well, good reinforcing tips Fingus!
Assuming Y up coordinates, your players Xpos would be stationary but the input would drive the rotation of the tower model and your Ypos would be constrained to a base constant += your jump - gravity over time. You could also script modular meshes to swap out giving the variety.
Here at Relic - Basically us level designers do greyboxing/layouts, scripting, encounter design, event setups, and other gameplay related stuff. Environment artists take our ugly greyblock layouts and make them perdy, do all the modeling / texturing / world building / visual stuff.
If it´s doable with Ogre3D and their shader system why not? Or not really ogre but with cg-shaders. But keep in mind, that my programs purpose isn´t for model presentation(it´s already able to do that though). First and foremost it´s meant to make life easier regarding material scripts and changing textures.

OFFTOPIC oh btw i checked your website and you did a lot cool scripts but maybe some gifs or videos for explanation would be good :) e.g. "key tools" sounds awesome since the built in stuff isnt that good. but i have no idwa what they're doing :D
Pior: I use software to make my caps lock do that, so I wouldn't call it stupid at all! Caps is a fucking useless key, and I've toyed around with just setting it to run scripts etc..., since I don't even use it for its intended purpose anyway
Doh! Looks like I forgot to keep the 'delete aplha channel' & 'save as png' in the action script. You can add those to the action if you want, then when you run the batch process in PS, it'll save them all out as png's where you want them.
