To get a good grasp of the buttons and layouts in Maya, check out Digital Tutors. For 3ds max I think Eat3d has a good one. CGtuts has a nice collection for both and Gnomon is there once you understand the basics and you're looking to enhance your workflow. Also 3dmotive has a good highpoly tutorial from the preview I saw. -

it's just my opinion on what should be used, if the industry is lagging behind so be it, but zbrush models can be transferred to maya or 3ds max with a click of a button usually so I don't see what the big issue is. I do realize many studios tend to stick with what they know though, doesn't mean it's the right/fastest way… -

Yup in Max it's simply the hide/unhide buttons in the edit poly modifier panel. They are not in the quad menus by default but you can easily put them up there too (they are different from the regular hide/unhide) If needed I can go into more details Don't know about Maya, I never managed to make it behave that way properly. -

After clicking the button to share, and select which app/monitor to share, nothing is being shared. Tried with Chrome, and Firefox, doesn't work. That's after restart and reboot already. Weird. For the most part I use shortcuts in max also, I have a pretty elaborate setup to use and reuse buttons for different tasks just because its faster. But there are some operations that it just makes sense to do through the UI. It seems like digging into the hypergraph would be annoying and awkward, maybe its not, I'll have… -

I was gonna say it looked more like a rocket-launcher than a rifle till I saw the ref image. Looks nearly done. My only crit is the sides look really flat, beyond the little screws and buttons. Not many curves in the gun beyond the barrel, that makes the gun look rather simple and one-sided I think. -

Why? Please elaborate. Neither Zbrush nor VRay have a magic 'make art' button. You put more effort into something and get more out of it. Seems like a proper comparison to me. Following your line of argument I could complain that using Unity is cheating when I restrict myself to using the Q3 engine... -

In the SubTool Subpalette, you can merge down (which may require you to change the order of subtools, which you can also do there using the arrow buttons) and merge visible, similar to merging layers in Photoshop (there's a newer option to merge similar, which might even work well in this case and save you a few extra… -
