There are certain optimizations being applied to the ray marcher, that are based on some ray-bounding box intersections, and I'm pretty sure this wouldn't just work when trying to deform them along a spline. Are you trying to ask if a character could be animated with these? Cause there are other ways to do this.

I have had this problem with mental ray normal mirroring myself. Under render settings for mental ray, on the options tab and performance dropdown, check the Maya derivatives box. While I didn't use this with the same shader, try out my soloution and see if it helps.
Lots of ways to get a cavity map: - zbrush - Mental Ray ambient occlusion with a very short ray distance - render to texture a heightmap from your high detail mesh to a smoothed low detail mesh (a blobby model), then adjust curves in photoshop - the fabulous xNormal and CrazyBump
