I'd say its a Matte painting, where you usually (not always) combine rendered 3d elements, photos from life and manual painting together. Photos when used correctly can be an amazing way to create scenes like this quickly and effectively
If all you want to do is navigate the object itself, once you are on the edit poly: 1 = verts 2 = edges 3 = open edges 4 = faces 5 = elements 6 = back out to edit poly. These are the number keys on your keyboard.
Just wanted to chime in and say, I played the demo on my xbox 360 and judging by the demo it's a truly great game. With the stealth elements of the game, there is actually replay value in just the demo, which says a lot I think. Great job guys!
This is a great competition idea can't wait to see the different takes on the beast. My take is going to be some sort of earth/nature golem, or elemental, who only has the companionship of a lost girl. (Latest Image) Made a quick mood board and going to start concepting. More to come
Here's a matte painting that was created for my Digital Design Aesthetics class. We were tasked with designing and illustrating an environment using Photoshop CC. Character head model of augmented man. Main idea was to create a face of an old man with metal augmentation pieces. Really happy with the final piece, really like how metal elements look. Still need to sort out the skin material, looks a little bit unusual.

I refined the Blockout and started using a kitbash to quickly add some details. I'm not sure what elements of the kitbash will make it to the final version but for now, it will help to set the look. Kitbash is from amazing kitbash creator Oleg Ushenok (https://www.artstation.com/olegushenok).
