Hold ctrl and alt and scroll wheel then move mouse up and down. Smooth zooming. I usually work in ortho view. Most of the time its easier to work with and no clipping issue.
kurt_hectic: Hit Ctrl+u to view all the hotkeys and customize the ui, crop and resize do exist. Also take a brief look at their website. Not sure about the restart issue though...

Right click on the "Percent Snap toggle" (little magnet with the % sign). In the tab "Home grid" up the amount in "Perspective view grid extent". All the other options that relate to the grid can also be changed in that window.
